Create Normal Maps in Photoshop
If you are using an Nvidia graphics card, there is a free plug in for photoshop that you can use to create normal maps from your grayscale images. Check it out:
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html
You can use this as a substitute for crazy bump. You don't have the same control as crazy bump has but it is still better than just using regular grayscale bump maps.
